Don’t Expect to See St. Pierre vs. Usman Anytime Soon https://www.thesportsgeek.com/news/dont-expect-see-st-pierre-vs-usman-anytime-soon/ George St. Pierre was the welterweight champion from 2007 to 2013.  Kamaru Usman is now the top welterweight in the UFC.  More fans are now starting to call for St. Pierre vs. Usman.  George St. Pierre is widely considered to be one of the greatest mixed martial artists to ever compete. Despite being retired for years, fans continue to speculate on his comeback. Based on new comments from the former champ, it seems unlikely that we’ll ever see St. Pierre vs. Usman. That may be disappointing to hear for many fans. The truth is that “GSP” is now 39 years old. If he does decide to fight again, it would only be against an opponent with a huge following. Today, we’re going to look at what might come next for the legendary welterweight. Let’s get into it! Kamaru Usman Proves He’s the Best Welterweight in the World Since joining the UFC back in 2015, Kamaru Usman has done nothing but win. He’s now 17-1 as a professional with 12 straight wins in the UFC. On July 12th, Usman fought Jorge Masvidal in the main event of the first “Fight Island” card. There was a tremendous amount of hype heading into this matchup. Masvidal and Usman had clashed several times in the past and there was real animosity leading up to fight night. Even the best UFC betting experts had a difficult time predicting who would come out on top. It didn’t take long for Kamaru Usman to prove he was the better fighter. He pushed the pace early on and controlled Jorge against the cage. He kept this pressure for five rounds and left the cage as the winner via unanimous decision. With the win, Kamaru Usman proved that he’s the best welterweight in the world. He’s dominated almost every single opponent that he’s faced. Only Colby Covington was able to give him any real trouble inside the Octagon. Fans are now trying to imagine who could possibly dethrone the champ. There are several contenders waiting for their shot at the title. Interestingly, many are now looking at how a bout between Usman and George St. Pierre would play out. Don’t expect to see this bout anytime soon. St. Pierre vs. Usman is Unlikely to Ever Take Place There aren’t many mixed martial artists quite as respected as George St. Pierre. He dominated the welterweight division for many years and holds wins over several legendary fighters. After capturing the middleweight title in November of 2017, GSP seemed to hang up the gloves for good. St. Pierre has been out of the public spotlight for years. Fans continue to speculate about his return to fighting, though. Many felt he would eventually take on either Khabib Nurmagomedov or Conor McGregor. Recently, fans have begun pushing to see St. Pierre vs. Usman. It would pit the former welterweight kingpin against the new one. From a stylistic matchup, this fight would be incredible to see. Unfortunately, GSP seems uninterested in the fight. He was recently asked about fighting Usman by a TMZ reporter. George gave Usman compliments, but doesn’t appear willing to compete as a professional again. “Sometimes I’m watching the fights, and I’m like, ‘Man I think I can beat these guys.’ Or after when I’m done training I feel like I’m very confident,” he said. “But then after I go home at night, and I’m thinking about all that crazy thoughts, and I’m like, ‘I’m gonna be 40 years old soon. Do I really want to go back and do a hardcore training camp of two months, put myself in jail so to speak, and get ready for hell? I’m like, No, I don’t… He’s amazing [Usman], He’s very, very smart. Everyone talks about his physical abilities and his skills, but what I think is his best attribute is his brain… I came out at the right time. I made a lot of money, and I think the problems are when I matured and calculated the pros and cons, it’s better that I stay retired.” That pretty much sums up what most fans expected. St. Pierre vs. Usman is an incredible fight on paper. It seems highly likely that GSP would ever decide to compete again unless it was in a “super-fight” with someone like Conor McGregor. Who Will Kamaru Usman Fight Next? As we already mentioned, there are several fighters waiting to get their crack at Usman. Before Jorge Masvidal stepped in, Usman was supposed to take on Gilbert Burns. Many feel this is the most logical fight to book next for Kamaru. Some fans, particularly those in the UK, are calling for Usman to take on Leon Edwards next. Edwards is now 18-3 in his MMA career with wins in his past eight bouts. He’s certainly deserving of a title shot. A fight between Burns and Edwards may make sense to determine a true number-one contender. Anything is possible in MMA. Perhaps GSP is simply keeping fans in the dark about a potential move back to MMA. Some still feel that we’ll see St. Pierre vs. Usman within the next year or two. Jorge Masvidal wants a rematch with Kamaru, too. Colby Covington is also hanging around in the title picture. When looking at all the contenders, it’s easy to see why so many people consider welterweight to be the best division in MMA. Fight fans have some exciting bouts to look forward to. This weekend, Darren Till and Robert Whittaker will compete in the main event of Fight Island 3. The winner may end up getting the next title shot against Israel Adesanya.
