Selke Trophy for Best Defensive Forward The Selke Trophy is awarded every season to the forward who plays the best defensive role. These finalists were announced on Monday and are voted upon by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. This season’s nominees include Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins, Ryan O’Reilly of the St. Louis Blues and Sean Couturier of the Philadelphia Flyers. Patrice Bergeron earned his ninth consecutive nomination for this award and has won the award four times. Bergeron blocked 46 shots this season in his 61 appearances. He earned a positive 23 plus/minus score. Bergeron helped lead the Bruins to the Presidents trophy and the least amount of goals against. Ryan O’Reilly earned his second nomination for this award after winning the Selke Trophy last season. O’Reilly earned a plus 11 and blocked 42 shots throughout this season. He played a lot of penalty kill time throughout this season, which helped give St. Louis a solid penalty kill percentage this season. Sean Couturier is a finalist for the second time in his career after losing to Anze Kopitar back in the 2017-18 season. Couturier finished with a plus/minus score of positive 21. Couturier blocked only 26 shots, but led the league in face off winning percentage. These three players all make really good cases for the trophy. Bergeron has been a consistent defensive threat over his career, which has helped him earn nine consecutive nominations for this award. O’Reilly came away with this trophy last season, while Couturier was the runner up back in the 2017-18 season. Norris Trophy Could Be a Runaway The Norris Trophy is awarded every season to the best defenseman in the NHL. The finalists were announced on Monday and include Victor Hedman of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Roman Josi of the Nashville Predators and John Carlson of the Washington Capitals. This trophy is also voted on by the Professional Hockey Writers Association. Victor Hedman finished the season third in points for all defenseman with 11 goals and 44 assists. Hedman finished with a plus/minus score of positive 27. He blocked 98 shots in route to his third straight Norris Trophy nomination. Hedman took home the trophy back in the 2017-18 season. Roman Josi finished the season with 16 goals and 49 assists, setting career highs in goals, assists and points. Josi blocked 108 shots and earned a plus-22 rating. This is Josi’s first career nomination for the award. John Carlson had a phenomenal season, earning 15 goals and 60 assists in 69 games played. Carlson is the first defenseman to average over a point per game since the 1993-94 season. He finished out the season with a plus-12 rating and 108 blocked shots. This is also Carlson’s first nomination for the award. While all three defenseman earning nominations had great seasons, John Carlson is the heavy favorite to take home the award. Carlson played extremely well and broke through the point per game mark, which hadn’t been set by a defenseman since the early 90’s. Carlson also played a crucial role in the defensive zone with his play. Hart Trophy Recognizing the MVP The Hart trophy is given out every season to the player who is recognized as the most valuable player to his team that season. This season’s nominees are Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche, Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers and Artemi Panarin of the New York Rangers. Nathan MacKinnon finished out the season with 35 goals and 58 assists, which was good for fifth in the NHL. MacKinnon helped the Avalanche earn the second best record in the Western Conference. MacKinnon finished out the season with 29 multipoint games to help him earn his second nomination for the award. Leon Draisaitl had a great season with Edmonton. Draisaitl finished with a league leading 110 points. He finished with 43 goals and 67 assists in 71 games played. Draisaitl finished with 33 multipoint games and help lead Edmonton to this season’s best power play. This is Draisaitl’s first nomination for the award. Artemi Panarin helped turn around New York’s season to help them sneak into a place in the Stanley Cup Qualifiers. Panarin was third in the league in points with 32 goals and 63 assists. Second place on the Rangers finished with 75 points. Panarin had a plus-36 rating this season to help give New York a chance to compete. While MacKinnon had a great season, this race is more between Panarin and Draisaitl. Draisaitl finished out with the most points and helped get Edmonton into a great spot to compete for the Stanley Cup, but there is an argument for the offensive help he had in Connor McDavid. Panarin did a great job helping New York go on a heater before the season came to a halt, which has them in a spot to try and sneak into a playoff spot. I would expect one of those two players to take home the hardware. via The Sports Geek https://www.thesportsgeek.com July 22, 2020 at 07:54AM https://sv88.com
